Marrakech, 7th of March 2007
The first update after nearly 2 weeks of the big trip !
Yes, finnally we (Loic, Mathilde and Boumbo, the van!!!) set off from Lyon on the 21st of February after 2 months of very intensive preparation. Everyone was required to do some mecanics, polishing and painting, and we had a very reassuring support! Thanks everyone!
Weel now all this is quite far away! We took the boat from Sete in the south of France on the 24th of February and it was already Morocco judging from the language as well as the rythm and people’s clothes! After 36hours of sleeping, eating and relaxing, playing guitar and drinking rhum outside on the deck, we arrive in Tanger north of Morocco.
But the first real city we discover is Chefchaouen, about 100miles from Tanger. The white and blue city, in the middle of the mountains. The town is built just with very narrow streets where it’s really easy to get lost but in the end, it’s a good thing and we never go very far, it’s not so big! We stayed 2 days there, just the beginning of travelling, take some time to read a book, no matter what time you eat and take time to discover the country by talking to people; we don’t need to speak the same language, but we try to learn a few words in Arabic… not so easy!!
The next few days we are wondering around the middle Atlas towards Marrakech. One night we even slept in a small village, right next to a farm and after trying to ask if they don’t mind us staying here just for one night, we end up in their living room, drinking tea and eating bread with some homemade peach jam. Everyone knows my “homemade” addiction…
Moroccan are just so nice, at first you think there is something wrong but it’s just how they are, almost all of them! Just so happy to see us and our smile and exchange a few words.
We are a little bit sad to leave this family but we finally set off in the morning, with 4 fresh eggs as a gift!
We have quite a long way to go and Boumbo is not going very fast.
Here the temperature during the day is around 25 to 30 degrees and quite fresh in the night because of the mountains! Ideal weather for March! Our body slowly starts to think that it’s the summer again!
We had one night in a small village called Ouzoud , very famous for it’s waterfalls and in the summer it’s full of tourists but at this time it was just perfect, no one around and we had a fantastic view! Have a look at the pictures!
Here in Marrakech it’s a little bit warmer especially at night. We arrived in Marrakech on Saturday and we are staying here with Loic’s uncle for a few days because we have some modification to make on the van. Like a gallery (not sure of this world, but it’s a metallic frame to put outside on the roof to put the extra tyre we have and some other stuff….) and some mecanics so that the van will be ready for the desert!
Around Marrakech there is so much to see, we had one day in the Ourika valley, doing off road around the Atlas mountains, a great day!
And we discover for the second time all those little streets and souk in Marrakech, la Medina (the center) and all its secrets….
So after all that we will be on the way to Mauritania to see some friends and then Mali, Burkina Faso and Senegal.
It’s only the beginning of the big adventure which will last 5 month, but already it’s like something magical, something we’ve been waiting for so long and finally it’s just here!
Right, I hope to be able to write in English a little bit more, it’s a good exercise for me, it’s gone so quickly, I can’t believe it!
Well, forgive me for all the errors in English!
And I hope you’re all right and take care of yourself!
Travelling is a big adventure, discover the world, the countryside, the city you want, but above all, discover yourself!
